Charter Housing Association is committed to offering our customers as much choice as possible. Charter By Choice is designed to enable customers to choose where they want to live.
To get a property via Charter By Choice you will first need to register. This can be done by:
- phoning us on 01633 678538
- applying online using this website (www.charterbychoice.co.uk)
- completing an application form (link here for download file)
Once registered, your application will be assessed and you will be sent confirmation of your band and registration details. You will be a “homeseeker” unless you already have a tenancy with us, when you will be classed as a “transfer”.
Homeseeker applications are registered from the date the housing application is received. If there is a change in circumstances which results in a change of band, the registration date will become the date the person moved into that band. Applications from other council or housing association tenants will be treated as homeseekers.
Transfer applications will be registered from the date the current tenancy commenced.
In Monmouthshire we are part of a Common Housing Register with Monmouth Council and Gwerin and Eastern Valley Housing Associations. You need only complete one application form to register with any or all of the landlords.
All available properties are advertised and you need to let us know if there are any properties in which you are interested. Properties are advertised in a wide variety of ways including:
- on our website (www.charterbychoice.co.uk)
- on our Property Line (01633 678525)
- in a wide range of locations such as libraries, council and housing association offices, community centres etc
The adverts will list household types that are eligible for each property such as a single person or childless couple for a 1 bedroom flat with preference given to “homeseekers”. In accordance with government guidance, we offer 50% of vacancies to local authority partners. These are advertised as “nomination” properties.
Properties are advertised in 7 day “cycles”. At the end of each cycle we draw off a list of all the people who expressed an interest in the properties sorted into band and registration date. The properties are offered to the customer in the highest band with the longest registration date.
At the end of the cycle we will publish information about the band and waiting time of the successful bidder. This will enable other customers to check that the system was fair and to work out how long they are likely to wait for a property.
